Project : "A violin for the "Marie Cantagrill International Violin Competition"

 The violin will be owned by the "association Musique et partage en couserans" organizing the competition. 

It will be lent every year to one of the Laureates.

"The idea came up sharing with the violinist soloist Marie Cantagrill, who organizes for the fourth year the international violin competition under her name (registration for 2016 are open !).
Observing that the determining aspects that a violin cann provide to the violinist for a full artistic expression are richness in harmonics, colors and warmth, and that a great violin isn't always financially reachable to the best violinist, we decided to make an exact copy of the Bernardo Calcagni 1748, played by Marie Cantagrill, which has outstanding warmth and timbre."

Projet "Un violon pour le Concours International de Violon Marie Cantagrill"

Le violon fini sera donné à l'association „Musique et Partage en Couserans“ qui organise le concours. 

Il sera alors prêté chaque année pour une durée de 1 an à un lauréat du concours de violon.

"L'idée a germée en concertation avec la violoniste soliste Marie Cantagrill, qui organise le concours international de violon portant son nom (4e édition en 2016, les inscriptions sont ouvertes !). Partant du constat que la richesse du timbre, des couleurs que le violon met à disposition de l'instrumentiste est essentiel pour leur expression artistique, et qu'un grand violon n'est pas toujours à la portée financière du meilleur musicien !

Le violon sera ainsi l'exacte copie de celui fait par Bernardo Calcagni à Gènes en 1748, que joue la soliste, et dont la richesse du timbre est exceptionnelle !

Le projet est entièrement financé par la fondation de la Banque Populaire pour les métiers d'art.

Naji Subhy Paul Irénée HAKIM est né à Beyrouth le 31 octobre 1955. Il fit ses études avec Jean Langlais ainsi qu'au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris - dans les classes de R. Boutry, J.-C. Henry, M. Bitsch, R. Falcinelli, J. Castérède et S. Nigg, où il a remporté sept premiers prix.
Il est titulaire d'une licence d'enseignement en orgue du Trinity College of Music de Londres et de dix premiers prix internationaux d'orgue et de composition.

En 1991, l 'Académie des Beaux-Arts lui décerne le Prix André Caplet et en 2009 le Premier Prix du Concours de Composition de Musique Sacrée de la Cathédrale de Monaco.

De 1985 à 1993, il fut l'organiste titulaire de la Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, avant de succéder à Olivier Messiaen à l'église de la Trinité (1993 à 2008).

Il est professeur d'analyse au Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt, et visiting professor à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres.

Il est ingénieur de l'École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Paris, membre de la Consociatio Internationalis Musicæ Sacræ de Rome et Docteur honoris causa de l'Université Pontificale Saint-Esprit de Kaslik, Liban.

En 2007, Sa Sainteté le Pape Benoît XVI a décerné à Naji Hakim l' "Augustæ crucis insigne pro Ecclesia et Pontifice", pour l'excellence de son engagement et de son travail au bénéfice de l'Eglise et du Saint Père.

Ses oeuvres comprennent des pièces instrumentales (orgue, flûte, hautbois, clarinette, basson, cor, trompette, harpe, guitare, violon, piano), de la musique symphonique (Les Noces de l'Agneau, Hymne de l'Univers, Ouverture Libanaise, Påskeblomst, Augsburger Symphonie, quatre concertos pour orgue, un concerto pour violon, un concerto pour piano) de la musique vocale (oratorio Saul de Tarse, cantate Phèdre, deux Magnificats et quatre messes).

Dédié à Marie Cantagrill en 2004, le CAPRICCIO dans sa version pour violon et piano (2016) a été préparé spécialement pour le Concours International Marie Cantagrill 2016 (à partir d'une version initiale pour violon et orgue qui date de 2004, résultant d'une commande de l'American Guild of Organists pour la Chicago National Convention 2006).

Ce Capriccio développe un thème vivant et dansant dans une forme sonate. L'exposition met en jeu plusieurs dérivations d'un même thème. Un deuxième thème de caractère expressif, avec un accompagnement percussif, prépare la réexposition variée avant une brillante coda.

This year, the compulsory contemporary piece of the Excellence Category of the "Marie Cantagrill International Violin Competition" is "CAPRICCIO for violin and piano"*, composed by the Franco-Lebanese composer NAJI HAKIM who dedicated it to Marie Cantagrill.

Naji Subhy Paul Irénée HAKIM was born in Beirut , 31 October, 1955. He studied with J. Langlais and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris - classes of R. Boutry, J.-C. Henry, M. Bitsch, R. Falcinelli, J. Castérède and S. Nigg, where he was awarded seven first prizes.

He is a licentiate teacher in organ from Trinity College of Music in London and won ten first prizes at international organ and composition competitions.

In 1991 he was awarded the Prix André Caplet from the Académie des Beaux-Arts and in 2009 the Premier Prix du Concours de Musique Sacrée de la Cathédrale de Monaco.

At first organist of the Basilique du Sacré-Coeur, Paris from 1985 until 1993, he then became organist of l'église de la Trinité, in succession to Olivier Messiaen, from 1993 until 2008.
He is professor of musical analysis at the Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt, and visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

He is a graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris, member of the Consociatio Internationalis Musicae Sacrae in Rome and Doctor honoris causa of the Pontifical University Saint-Esprit of Kaslik, Lebanon .

In 2007, His Holiness Pope Benediktus XVI has awarded Naji Hakim The Augustae crucis insigne pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, for his excellent commitment and work for the benefit of the Church and the Holy Father.

His works include instrumental music (organ, flute, bassoon, horn, trumpet, harp, guitar, violin, piano), symphonic music (Les Noces de l'Agneau, Hymne de l'Univers, Ouverture Libanaise, Påskeblomst, Augsburger Symphonie, four organ concertos, a violin concerto, a piano concerto), and vocal music (oratorio Saul de Tarse, cantata Phèdre, Magnificat and four masses).

Dedicated to Marie Cantagrill in 2004, the Capriccio, in its violin and piano version (2016), has been specifically prepared for the "Marie Cantagrill International Violin Competition 2016 (the initial version for violin and organ was composed in 2004, and performed following an order from the American Guild of Organists for the Chicago National Convention in 2006).

It's in Couserans (South-West of France), in the beautiful city of Saint-Lizier, city of art and history, that, once again, this 4th edition of the «Marie Cantagrill International Violin Competition» will take place, organized by the association «Musique et Partage en Couserans».

The Competition is open to all levels (from Beginners to Excellence levels), to all nationalities and all countries. 

Performances being public, the competition is an opportunity for beginners and advanced violinists to meet and present their best work to a jury of professionals and to a caring audience.

Designed to create an emulation, that is a dynamic fit to stimulate the arising of new talents, this «musical encounter» will give to all a chance to discover new interpretations, technics and also profit of wise and professional advices, all of that in an atmosphere of conviviality and sharing.

The jury is chaired by the virtuoso Marie Cantagrill and it'll consist of violinists and musicians recognized for their work.

As for every past edition, the 1st prize winners of each category will be invited to come back in October to play as soloists with the Ariege Chamber Orchestra during the competition's prize winners concert.

In addition to the prizes from the professional jury, in each category will be given a special audience Prize that will reflect our desire to underline that in art and music, the emotion felt by the public has to remain the essence.

                                            Présentation

C'est toujours en Couserans, dans le beau village de Saint-Lizier, Cité d'Art et d'Histoire, que se déroulera le « 4ème Concours International de Violon Marie Cantagrill", organisé par «Musique et Partage en Couserans». Ce Concours, ouvert au public, sera l’occasion, pour les violonistes petits et grands, de se rencontrer et de présenter un travail d'excellence devant un jury de professionnels et un public attentif.

Destinée à créer une émulation, une dynamique, propres à favoriser l’émergence de nouveaux talents, cette « rencontre musicale » permettra à tous de découvrir des interprétations et techniques différentes, et de bénéficier de conseils judicieux et professionnels. Et ce, dans un esprit de partage et de convivialité.

Le Jury, présidé par la virtuose Marie Cantagrill, sera composé de violonistes et musiciens éminemment reconnus par la profession.

Un Prix spécial du public dans chaque catégorie, outre les prix attribués par le jury de professionnels, témoigne de la volonté de garder à l’art, à la musique, son âme et sa substance première : l’émotion ressentie par le public. 

Par ailleurs, les gagnants des 1ers Prix de chaque catégorie seront également invités à revenir jouer en soliste avec l'Orchestre de Chambre d'Ariège en Octobre pour le Concert annuel des Lauréats du Concours Marie Cantagrill.
